In January 2007 the University of Plymouth launched this 3-day MMO course, the first in the UK to introduce delegates to mitigation guidelines from around the world and incorporate invaluable input from industry. Supported by OceanEar and the WGP Group, the course is designed specifically for those with little or no knowledge of marine mammal observation techniques. The course is led by experts in marine biology and marine surveying from the University of Plymouth, aided by staff from the WGP Group who provide an industry perspective of the MMO role offshore. The result is a balanced and objective course designed to equip the prospective MMO with the knowledge needed in order to provide a professional service while working alongside any offshore team.
Delegates are equipped with a detailed understanding of the role of an MMO, modern seismic surveying techniques, marine mammal biology, species identification and all current mitigation guidelines from around the world. Future modules that can be offered additionally include monitoring for construction and demolition operations. This is the first course to include a practical element introducing delegates to passive acoustic monitoring, and an opportunity to practice with range estimation techniques whilst aboard a vessel.
The course meets the requirements set by the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and US Minerals Management Service (MMS), enabling delegates to work as MMOs in the UK sector, Gulf of Mexico and beyond.
The development of this course is thanks to funding under a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the WGP Group and the University of Plymouth, supported by the Natural Environment Research Council and former Department for Trade and Industry.
